HVAC is short for “Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning” system. It’s essentially the comfort control system for your home or office. It helps regulate the temperature and humidity of the building during the dog days of August, the blue days of February, and every day in between.
Your HVAC system contains multiple components, including an outdoor unit (generally the biggest part of the system) as well as indoor coolers and blowers. The duct work is another critical component of the system. Ducts transmit conditioned air throughout your home. The ducts in some ways act like the veins in your circulatory system – or, even better, the bronchial tubes in your lungs. A main trunk contains most of the air (by volume) and moves the air through the house, where the air can be heated, cooled, filtered, etc.
A heat pump HVAC system is one of the most common types of systems. But some homes use AC/furnace HVACs. Still other homes — particularly here in Northern California, where people are more environmentally motivated — use hybrid HVAC systems that use gas furnaces and heat pumps. “Going hybrid” can reduce your utility costs.
Both California and the federal government impose guidelines on HVAC performance to make sure these systems meet minimum efficiency and quality standards.
