Summer is synonymous with vacations, lazy afternoons by the pool and cookouts. It’s also a great time to tackle some home maintenance chores. Here are some maintenance tips you can use to get your home in shape and running smoothly.

Summer Time Home Maintenance Tips

Clean Your A/C Filter

Air conditioning maintenance is essential to ensuring your home stays comfortable throughout the season. Your air conditioner has an air filter that needs to be regularly cleaned. A dirty filter impedes the airflow that your air conditioner needs to function properly and reduces indoor air quality since it can’t remove contaminants from the air as easily. Make sure you clean your filter every two weeks using a vacuum cleaner or warm water.

Reverse Ceiling Fan Blade Rotation

In the summer, you should change the rotation of your ceiling fan blades from clockwise to counter-clockwise. This helps direct air straight down towards the occupants of a room, creating a wind-chill effect.

Start by shutting off the fan and waiting until the blades have stopped completely. Use a step stool or ladder to reach the motor housing. Locate the direction switch and flip it in the opposite direction. Finally, turn the fan back on.

Many ceiling fans come with remote controls that have the reverse button. If you have such a fan, reversing the blade rotation is simple. Start by pressing the stop button and waiting for the blades to stop completely, then press the reverse button.

Clean the A/C Fan

You need to clean the dust off your A/C unit’s fan. To do so, turn off the power to the air conditioner then remove its frame followed by the fan motor, which should be behind the fins in your unit. Although you may need tools to remove the wires and bolts holding down the fan, the fan removal process shouldn’t be too difficult to accomplish. Once you’ve removed the fan, clean it, and then replace it. If you need help with this task, don’t hesitate to call a Bay Area general contractor.

Clean or Replace Your Furnace Filter

Your furnace too has a filter that will need to be replaced or cleaned depending on the type. You’ll need to turn off power to your furnace then remove the filter, which is located behind the service door. You may have to unscrew one or two panels to remove it. Wash the filter if it’s a reusable one or change it if it has a cardboard frame.
